MEET THE COMMITTEE

Michele Varmen - Chair

I started my Snelson Coloured Ryeland flock in 2014 after seeing some lambs that looked like chocolate teddy bears at Cheshire show. I had been looking for a suitable breed of sheep to begin my shepherding life after suffering injuries to both shoulders and therefore retiring from riding, which had been my first love. I live with my husband Richard at Ivy Farm, a 12 acre smallholding in East Cheshire, and for my day job I have a bakery business in Liverpool.

My Snelson flock has 12 breeding ewes, and this year I had my first lambs for my new Moss Rose Ryeland flock, which has 6 ewes. I aim to produce correct stock with all the characteristics of the breed. I enjoy showing my sheep, and have been lucky enough to have had success, and I usually have stock for sale either from home or at the Society sales. I joined the committee in 2017 partly because as a novice sheep breeder myself I wanted to learn more, and be able to help others by organising workshops and events in the region.

The committee members all work together to do this and the events we have organised have been a great success. I have met so many lovely people involved with the RFBS I think buying those 3 ewes back in 2014 was one of the best decisions of my life!
